I do apologise if I have not mentioned a word of thanks often enough but let it be recorded now that I truly appreciate the efforts every single one of you have put in for the Student Council and for the School over the years.

I do understand that at times you feel the injustice as rewards are not synonymous with work done but I urge you to persevere and press on for during every thunderstorm, there is bound to be a rainbow bearing a pot of gold at its end.

Semester 2 Begins!

Dear Councillors,

The month long June holidays are slowly slipping away from us and it's probably time for us to begin to adjust our biological clocks once again to prepare for the new school term. However, prior to that, there must be a few things we have to check:

Have we completed all assigned holiday homework?
Do we need to replenish our stationery?
Will we have the proper attire/ appearance by Day 1?

Do remember that as Student Councillors we have huge expectations to live up to and all eyes will be on us as the school reopens to a new term.

Also, bear in mind that the seniors will be away for Sec 3 Camp in Week 1 so we're looking towards the juniors to help uphold the standard and image of the Student Council during that period of time.

Meanwhile, enjoy the rest of the holidays!

End of Term 1

Dear Councillors,

We have come to the end of Term 1 and it is perhaps a good time for us to reflect upon our performance within this week of break.

Firstly, I would like to commend the many conscientious Student Councillors who have been going about very diligently with their duties day in day out despite the many challenges along the way. Thank you for the great effort!

However, it is still quite noticeable that there are some of us who are not putting our best foot forward for whatever reasons there might be. I would like to urge everyone to think about the past 10 weeks and tell yourself honestly whether you have given your best effort to work for the Student Council, and whether you deserve the substantial credits and CCA points that comes with being a member of the Student Council. Should your answer be negative, I think it is high time to change.

Secondly, we have always been harping about our Student Councillors being the cream of the crop but are we really able to live up to that reputation? We talk about the other students being noisy and disruptive in class, about how they seem to always bring food out of the canteen, about how they don't seem to be serious in their school work. Then what about us? Can we really say that we are the best behaving students? Have we not given our teachers problems before? Have we not had our names written down in class journals simply because we can't stop talking in class?

I think we need to up our standards again and we should not condone our fellow Student Councillors being ill-behaved. How will the school climate improve if even the Student Councillors are getting into trouble? It will then become very difficult to justify punishing others when our Student Councillors are committing the same offence. If that's the case, our Student Councillors are no different from any other student from the general student population. We have to improve and if needed, remove the dead wood and black sheep from the Student Council, a move that I will be looking into in Term 2.

Student Councillors who choose not to help out, choose not to live up to the name of the SC, will be asked to leave and have all their accumulated CCA points from the Student Council removed. I hope this will serve as a fair warning for everyone involved, and if you care about your peers, REMIND THEM!

Lastly, have a good term break and let's aim for higher goals next term!

2009 Student Leader Congress @ TJC

For the following 5 Student Councillors who are going for the Student Leader Congress at TJC next Monday and Tuesday, please read this post for more details. The students are Carl, Aishah, Kristel, Amira and Mahesh.

The program for the 2 days is as such:

Last but not least, some additional information the 5 of you need to take note of.

Changes:

Day 2 of the congress will be held in Chung Cheng as the A'level examinations will be taking place in TJC. Therefore, on day 1, participants are to report to TJC and on day 2, participants are to report to Chung Cheng high (main) (located along Goodman road). NO transportation from TJC to Chung Cheng will be provided for participants on day 2.

The reporting time for both days have been changed. Kindly note the changes. Attached to this email is the programme outline for the 2 days.

For the registration on day1 (0900), in order to facilitate smooth traffic flow, each school should only send one student representative forward to make payment as well as to update us of the attendance of your other schoolmates involved in the event. Payment by invoice is also accepted but please indicate to us if that is your preferred method of payment. If payment is by cash, a receipt will be issued.

Final Term Examinations

Letter of Compliment

To all Student Councillors who helped out during Graduation Day, this letter from one of the SPF teachers is meant for you. Read it well:

"Dear Alex,
We must commend on the very good effort of the Sec 2 & 3 Student Councillors who helped out for the reception for Graduation Day. I had only approached Kaori along the classroom corridor , a day before the reception asking for the SC's assistance as a few of the original helpers backed out last minute. By afternoon, she immediately got me a list of about 9 SCs to help out. On the very day of reception, more than 10 turned up with the other helpers. I was very pleasantly surprised at their commitment.

After the career exhibition, a lot of materials and litters were strewn and left behind in the canteen by our pupils and exhibitors. The SCs took upon the task of clearing up all the mess and even shifted back all the benches and tables from the career booths. I only needed to instruct a few key SCs and I witnessed them instructing the rest what to do, which was followed up with swift actions.

After the reception, the canteen was strewn with mess by our graduants with their food, paper cups and plates again, the SCs helped out with the clearance swiftly and waited patiently for me to dismiss them at the end of the day. Among the teachers there (James, Mdm Chiam and me ), we felt very proud that they had done a very good job! They had really risen to the occasion despite a last minute appeal for assistance. Please kindly compliment them in your next meeting and extend our appreciation. Indeed, this is commendable leadership!

We also want to thank Mr James Wong for giving us the support for the set up and clearance.

So there you have it. Always have faith and believe in whatever you need to do. It took us a while to get to this point where teachers will compliment us but we have arrived!

However, I strongly urge everyone not to rest on your laurels as this is but a small success and the beginning of greater things to come. Remember to be humble as always and to take the initiative in doing everything you feel needs attention to.

Moving forward, we have to improve as a whole and on my part, I will make sure that being a Springfield Councillor, while trying and challenging at times, will provide for a prestigious, fruitful and rewarding experience.

Canteen Duties & Misc

Dear Councillors,

In light of the current H1N1 situation, a lot of your duties have already been suspended, especially all morning duties. However, in order to uphold the image of the Student Council, I will need ALL Student Councillors to be involved in canteen duty until further notice.

With regards to that, whichever recess your class has been assigned, please do your duty then. Do not wait for others to work. It is your responsibility to Lead By Example, to be an Active Leader rather than a passive one.

By canteen duty, we refer to getting the whole school to consume their food IN THE CANTEEN. No student should be eating outside the canteen and after they are done, gently remind them to return their cutlery.

As for the Secondary Three Student Councillors, we are unable to meet up as yet but prior to the school holidays, we had a meeting in the AVA room and all of you were given tasks. Most are unfulfilled as yet and I want them to be done before the school gets busy again.

If you have forgotten what you owe me, refer to the minutes again. Kaori probably has a copy.

And for everyone else, this blog doesn't seem to be reaching many people. Please relay the messages or let them know of the existence of this blog.

H1N1 Updates

To all Student Councillors, please take note of the updates below and help keep everyone informed. This is rather urgent and of utmost importance at this stage.

On Monday, Councillors need not help with Class Registers. All students are to report to class immediately.
Everyone MUST bring their thermometers. I do not wish to see Councillors sitting outside GO.
Travel declaration forms MUST be completed to be submitted when school reopens.
Take good care of personal hygiene, stay healthy, eat more fruits and drink more water.
Lastly, stay alert as the Student Council MIGHT be called upon in times of emergency.

Confirmation into Student Council

I would like to congratulate the newly appointed Student Councillors, from Secondary One and Secondary Two, for having completed their probation over the past months.

However, let it be known that confirmation means that your responsibility has increased and I will be stricter with the standards required. There will be greater pressure coming down upon each and everyone of you and you will finally understand the importance of Team Work.

For now, I would like the new Student Councillors to collect their confirmation letter from me.

Also, from the first day of Term 3, all Student Councillors should be wearing black shoes. For students under FAS, I have already informed the School about your situation.

Mid Year Exam Approaching

Dear Councillors,

The Mid Year Examination is fast approaching and I hope everyone of you are well prepared for it. Do not be overwhelmed by the examinations as it is a good opportunity for you to see where you need further improvement in.

For the Sec Ones, 2009 is a great leap for you in terms of the number subjects and while some might not have done as well during Common Test, do not despair. Work hard and you shall achieve!

For the Sec Twos, having one year of secondary school life under your belt, this is the year where you strengthen your foundation and get the best results so that you can get into the class of you choice in Secondary Three.

For the Sec Threes, all of you must be looking at the bigger picture which is the 'N' or 'O' Levels in a year's time. Having said that, do not start to think that you can take it easy as you "have another year". Remember the incident this year where the 16 Sec 3 express students were pushed to Sec 4NA. It has happened before and it will happen again if we're not careful. DON'T BE COMPLACENT!!

For the Sec Fours, the finishing line is in view. Don't lose sight of it. There are only a few more months to go so hang in there, render one another support and finish the race together! Remember that by sacrificing your play time now, you actually get to enjoy more after getting good results.

Now for some announcements...

White Uniforms. All Student Councillors (except newly appointed ones) should be in their white uniforms before the start of Term 3. Students under FAS, please bring your FAS letter to the uniform shop and claim 2 sets of white uniform.
Duties. This will continue as normal but there should not be any new changes at this point in time. Focus on your MYE!! Any changes can be discussed after the examinations are cleared.

A Few Words

Firstly, thank you Jian Wei for taking the time out to set up the blog. I'm sure it'll prove very useful to us in disseminating information, especially during the school holidays when we are unable to check the notice boards in school for updates.

However, a medium of relaying messages is only as good as the way it is being utilised. Left alone, it will simply become a white elephant. And unless everyone diligently checks the blog, it will fall short of its main purpose as well.

On that note, the same goes for our Student Council per se. We are a family unit and thus we are only as strong as our weakest link. We can have members who excel in everything they do - studies, CCA, sports - but all we need is a single, lonesome black sheep in the family and the reputation of the Council goes down the drain and together with it, the efforts by everyone to bring it to where we are now.

Having said that, we are by no means near our true potential. We still have a long long way to go and perhaps it might be a few moons later before we even come close.

Nevertheless, do not despair; it is not all doom and gloom. We have witnessed quite a fair bit of positives during our short journey together and I have confidence in everyone that the positives will eventually outnumber the negatives in time to come.

I am pleased to say that during the Lower Secondary duty today (14th April 2009), those assigned with duties were manning their respective positions dutifully and seemingly enjoying playing a part for the Student Council. I feel proud to see my Lower Secondary students being so active in their work and taking pride in it as well.

The challenge hence would be for the Upper Secondary students to show their worth as well. The juniors have led the way. The seniors have to trump them.

To end off, remember this pharse I constantly live by whenever I feel there's something that needs to be done : "Not now then when? Not me then who?"
